Does Insurance Cover Couples Therapy?

Did you know couples therapy doesn’t need to be high cost? In fact, if you use insurance your therapy could be affordable. Yet many therapists say that insurance does not cover couples counseling, is this true? No, it's not true. Our guide will help you find couples therapy at an affordable rate, whether you use insurance or not.

We’ll cover:

The Cost of Couples Therapy

Couples therapy, which includes marriage counseling and relationship therapy, has a reputation for being high-cost. This is because therapists who don’t bill insurance will charge their private rate, which can be high. After all, it's double the work!

But many therapists themselves aren’t even aware that insurance covers couples therapy.

Or some dispute it, because in order to bill couples therapy you need to use a “family therapy” code. Unless you consider your partner/spouse more of a friend than family, this family therapy code is totally appropriate to use for billing

Some therapists don't bill insurance because they pay therapists less for couples therapy than individual therapy. But we consider this unethical, clients have a right to receive treatment covered through their insurance.

Therapists who don’t bill insurance tend to charge high rates, up to $200+ an hour. But with insurance it could be affordable, or even free.

So how do you find your actual cost? First you need to determine if your insurance covers therapy, we offer helpful information for exploring the cost of therapy here.

Finding Affordable Couples Therapy

If you’re using insurance, here’s the complication:

  • You need to find a therapist who takes your insurance

  • You need to find out if they bill couples therapy

As we mentioned, some therapists may accept your insurance but won’t bill it for couples therapy. That can be frustrating.

So here are the best ways to find a couples therapist covered by your insurance:

PsychologyToday allows you to filter therapists by both insurance and speciality. Use filters to select your insurance type and couples therapy, and then simply contact the therapists directly to ask if they bill insurance for couples therapy.

The Average Cost of Couples Therapy

The cost has a wide range. If you’ve met your insurance deductible or have Medicaid/Medicare, couples therapy should be free

However what if your insurance has a high deductible, or you found a great couples therapist but they won’t bill your insurance? This means you'll be doing private pay.

With private pay, the cost of couples counseling should be similar to individual therapy, which you can learn more about here. Therapy rates vary by state, and can range from low-cost options, around $50, to more standard rates of around $140 per session.
